I want something exciting to happen....
2007
Naomie Sunner's new works see her transform from Themeda, a bored punk computer geek into a contemporary superheroine on a mission to save the world. In the form of a comic book, she begins an exploration into what it means to be a female and powerful. Themeda, as Naomie Sunner's alter-ego, plays the part of the ultimate superheroine. Her superheroic fantasy is enav=cted in the shadow of her male counterparts, and the play that results is simulatenously a paraody of her impossible desire to become a superheroine, as well as a parody of the excessive masculinity of male superheroines.
The first part in a series exploring feminity and power, Chicks will save us all: Themeda, is part of Naomie Sunner's body of work for her Masters of Fine Arts degree at the Victorian College of the Arts. Expanding the performative nature of her work into narrative form, she is researching and developing characters which question and attempt to subvert normative ideas of gender roles.
