"Neither God nor tradition is priveleged with the same credibility as scientific rationality in modern cultures."
Vandana Shiva, Monocultures of the mind, 27
"It is culture that clones us, and metal cloning anticipates any biological cloning. It is the matrix of aquired traits that, today, clones us culturally under the sign of monothought - and it is all the innate differences that are annulled, inexorably, by ideas, by way of life, bycultural context."
Jean Baudrillard, The Vital Illusion, 17
We are entering a new age, one where we must renegotiate our definitions of reality. The age of biotechnology is rapidly changing the way we live all over the world. From genetically modified food grown from sterile seed, to 'designer babies', we are manipulating the genetic structure of life. Society increasingly believes in the 'quick fix' to problems through technology, and we look towards a world where noone will starve because genetically engineered food is more productive. It is a form of megalomania that our society and it's scientists are suffering when we believe that we can not only create, but also imporve upon life. We are entering the posthuman age, where we will be soon asked to redefine our definition of human, and of life itself.
